Kidney panels get less attention than hormones and liver enzymes until something looks off. Creatinine, BUN (urea), and eGFR are routine on metabolic panels — and they are routinely misread by people who treat a single creatinine bump as kidney failure or a high-BUN reading as proof of inadequate protein. Creatinine: not just kidney function
Creatinine is a breakdown product of muscle creatine phosphate. More muscle mass generally means higher baseline creatinine — a 220 lb lifter with significant lean mass will run higher than a sedentary reference population. Creatinine also rises with dehydration (concentrated blood) and can fall with over-hydration. eGFR is estimated from creatinine, age, and sex — it inherits all the same context problems.

BUN and the protein question

On-cycle fluid shifts
Aromatizing compounds, sodium-heavy diets, and certain steroids with mineralocorticoid activity change extracellular fluid. Kidney markers can move indirectly through hemoconcentration. Pair labs with blood pressure and how you actually drank that week.
What actually stresses kidneys on cycle
Exogenous testosterone and most injectables are not direct nephrotoxins in the way methylated orals are hepatotoxins. Kidney risk on cycle is more often indirect: sustained high blood pressure, rhabdomyolysis from extreme training, NSAID overuse, dehydration, or pre-existing kidney disease unmasked by hemodynamic stress. Oral AAS plus NSAIDs plus dehydration is a combination worth avoiding — not because creatinine will always spike, but because the margin for error shrinks.
